Matched Formulas and Backdoor Sets
نویسنده
چکیده
We demonstrate hardness results for the detection of small backdoor sets with respect to base classes Mr of CNF formulas with maximum deficiency ≤ r (M0 is the class of matched formulas). One of the results applies also to a wide range of base classes with added ‘empty clause detection’ as recently considered by Dilkina, Gomes, and Sabharwal. We obtain the hardness results in the framework of parameterized complexity, considering the upper bound on the size of smallest backdoor sets as the parameter. Furthermore we compare the generality of the parameters maximum deficiency and the size of a smallest Mr-backdoor set.

Upper and Lower Bounds for Weak Backdoor Set Detection
We obtain upper and lower bounds for running times of exponential time algorithms for the detection of weak backdoor sets of 3CNF formulas, considering various base classes. These results include (omitting polynomial factors), (i) a 4.54 algorithm to detect whether there is a weak backdoor set of at most k variables into the class of Horn formulas; (ii) a 2.27 algorithm to detect whether there ...
متن کاملFrom Horn Strong Backdoor Sets to Ordered Strong Backdoor Sets
Identifying and exploiting hidden problem structures is recognized as a fundamental way to deal with the intractability of combinatorial problems. Recently, a particular structure called (strong) backdoor has been identified in the context of the satisfiability problem. Connections has been established between backdoors and problem hardness leading to a better approximation of the worst case ti...
متن کاملBackdoors to Satisfaction
A backdoor set is a set of variables of a propositional formula such that fixing the truth values of the variables in the backdoor set moves the formula into some polynomial-time decidable class. If we know a small backdoor set we can reduce the question of whether the given formula is satisfiable to the same question for one or several easy formulas that belong to the tractable class under con...
متن کاملBackdoors to Acyclic SAT
Backdoor sets, a notion introduced byWilliams et al. in 2003, are certain sets of key variables of a CNF formula F that make it easy to solve the formula; by assigning truth values to the variables in a backdoor set, the formula gets reduced to one or several polynomial-time solvable formulas. More specifically, a weak backdoor set of F is a set X of variables such that there exits a truth assi...
متن کاملDetecting Backdoor Sets with Respect to Horn and Binary Clauses
We study the parameterized complexity of detecting backdoor sets for instances of the propositional satisfiability problem (SAT) with respect to the polynomially solvable classes horn and 2-cnf. A backdoor set is a subset of variables; for a strong backdoor set, the simplified formulas resulting from any setting of these variables is in a polynomially solvable class, and for a weak backdoor set...
